What is an absolute pressure sensor?

An absolute pressure sensor, or absolute pressure transmitter, measures the absolute pressure of a medium, related to the vacuum as a reference point. These sensors are particularly useful in environments where absolute pressure is crucial for safety reasons, such as aerospace, hydraulics or pneumatics. Absolute pressure transmitters are made of robust materials and can also include explosion protection certifications such as ATEX, CSA or IECEx so that they can also be used in hazardous environments.

How does an absolute pressure sensor work?

An absolute pressure sensor works by absorbing the pressure of a medium through a diaphragm that deforms proportionally to the pressure. This deformation is converted into an electrical signal by piezoresistive or capacitive sensors. The signal is then amplified, filtered, and converted into a standardized output signal (e.g., 4-20 mA, 0-10 V, or USB) that can be used for control systems or data acquisition devices. Our absolute pressure transmitters also offer EMC protection and high reliability to ensure precise measurements in a wide range of conditions.

What is an absolute pressure sensor used for?

Absolute pressure sensors are used in numerous areas:

  • Hydraulic systems: Monitoring and controlling the pressure in hydraulic cylinders and pumps.
  • Pneumatics: Precise pressure measurements in pneumatic systems.
  • Cooling circuits: Control of pressure in coolants.
  • Pumps and compressors: Ensuring optimal performance and protection against overpressure.
  • Special machines: used in machines that require high precision and reliability.
  • Explosion-proof areas: applications in environments that require explosion protection, thanks to certifications such as ATEX, CSA or IECEx.
